For the ISCM World New Music Days 2017, Hard Rubber New Music presents a 45-minute version of Riot, a powerful multi-media work-in-progress conceived by composer John Korsrud. Riot will be performed by Hard Rubber Riot Ensemble at the Roundhouse Performance Centre on Friday, November 3, in a double bill with Montreal powerhouse clarinetist Lori Freedman.

Riot tells the story of the shocking and destructive Vancouver hockey riot of 2011 that brought hundreds of arrests and millions of dollars of destruction. Korsrud’s musical response to the event promises to be an uncompromising look at mob mentality, privilege, and culpability. The music, inspired by the world of electronica, is performed by the Hard Rubber Riot Ensemble, a high-energy and eclectic group of musicians: John Korsrud, composer & director; Nino DiPasquale, Eliot Doyle, Tim Proznick, Randall Stoll, percussion; Jillian Lebeck, keyboard; Ron Samworth, guitar; Laurence Mollerup, bass; Mark Ferris, violin; Peggy Lee, cello; Cameron Andres, vocals. Riot will feature visuals by filmmaker Brian Johnson and Kim Collier, multimedia artist Aram Coen and collective Chimerik 似不像. Merging video footage and high energy music, Riot seeks to immerse one into the incomprehensible.

The annual World New Music Days Festival is led by the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM), and organized each year by a different host. This year’s event will be held on November 2-8 in Vancouver, BC. Featuring more than 30 concerts and outreach events by some of BC’s and Canada’s best musicians, the event will be a defining moment for contemporary music in Canada.

Established in 1992, the Hard Rubber New Music Society (HRNMS) is a charitable organization with a mandate to educate the Canadian public on and introduce a wider audience to contemporary music and multi-media art. Formed by in 1990 by John Korsrud, the 18-piece Hard Rubber Orchestra has been one of Canada’s most active and unpredictable ensembles of creative music.
